CINCINNATI — The Patriots released running back James Robinson on Monday.

The 24-year-old signed a two-year contract with New England on March 15.

Robinson is the exact type of player the Bengals should consider adding to their roster at this stage of the offseason.

The fourth-year back is subject to waivers. Cincinnati should claim Robinson for a few reasons.

He ran for 1,070 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Jaguars in 2020 after signing with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent. He followed that up by averaging 4.7 yards-per-carry in 2021, despite playing in Urban Meyer's offense.

Robinson averaged 4.5 yards-per-carry and 7.1 yards-per-reception in his first two NFL seasons. He also showed good instincts as a pass blocker and has grown in that area throughout his career.

Robinson has 2,262 career rushing yards and 23 touchdowns (18 rushing).

Unfortunately, he suffered a torn Achilles at the end of the 2021 season. He never fully recovered last year and had just 425 rushing yards and five total scores in 11 total games with the Jaguars and Jets.

He would bolster the Bengals' backfield with a proven back alongside Joe Mixon.

Robinson has been a quality player in the NFL. Last season didn't go the way he had hoped, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth taking a flier on him.

Mixon is the Bengals starting running back. Guys like Chase Brown and Trayveon Williams are also pushing for playing time, but adding Robinson to the roster would be a low-risk move that would make sense for Cincinnati.

UPDATE: Robinson cleared waivers and is officially a free agent. The Bengals could bring him in for a workout at anytime and could offer a non-guaranteed, veteran minimum deal.
