Bengals' Offensive Line Breakdown: Analyzing Dominant Performance Against Colts
The Bengals beat the Colts in Week 14 to improve to 7-6 on the season.
Despite facing a top pass rushing team, Cincinnati tied their top pass protection grade (set last week).
The front five is on a hot streak in protection, with all three of their top grades coming in the last three weeks and all being graded at 85 or higher.
Overall, the group had a top five performance on the season against the Colts. There was some significant regression this week as far as run blocking is concerned. While it might be hard to match your highest graded game of the season, it would be nice to see more consistent run blocking.
Week 14: Struggles
The biggest struggles for the group this week, as far as execution goes, were in the run game. There was a big drop in effectiveness across the interior offensive line this week.
Ted Karras and Alex Cappa came out of Week 13 with their highest grades of the season. In Week 14, they finished with a bottom 5 overall grade. The biggest let down of the week was how they performed in the run game. Though their running backs were effective, Grover Stewart and DeForest Buckner had solid days against the Bengals' interior three.
Week 14: Standouts
Jonah Williams stood out in Week 14. He's been the Bengals' most consistent offensive lineman this season and I expected him to bounce back following a rough outing against the Jaguars. He did just that and then some against Indianapolis, as he was able to have a top 3 performance overall and his best game of the season in pass protection. Overall, it was a great week from Williams.
I can't talk about the right tackle without mentioning the left tackle, especially when Orlando Brown Jr. was the highest graded lineman for the Bengals against the Colts.
He also put together a top 3 performance against Indianapolis. He was the top graded run blocker of the group in Week 14. Brown has turned it up through the last few games.
He had his worst game of the season in Week 10 and has been on a tear ever since. In the last three weeks, he has strung together three of his five best performances of the season. In short, Brown is playing his best during the most critical stretch of the year.
