Monday Night Thriller: Top Takeaways From Bengals' 34-31 Win Over Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE — The Bengals beat the Jaguars 34-31 in an overtime thriller on Monday night.
Jake Browning guided an offense that moved the ball up and down the field and Cincinnati ended a 3-game losing streak.
Here are our takeaways from the primetime win:
Still Alive
There's been plenty of talk about tanking and draft position following Joe Burrow's season-ending wrist injury.
That chatter had gotten much louder following Cincinnati's Week 12 loss to the Steelers.
Browning and the Bengals kept their season alive on Monday night. Not only did they pick up an AFC win, but they moved to 6-6 with three winnable games over the next 18 days.
The Bengals play the Colts at home on Sunday, Dec. 10. They play the Vikings at home on Saturday, Dec. 16 and then they play the Steelers on the road on Dec. 23.
If Browning and the offense can look similar to the group we saw on Monday night, then there's no reason why they can't be competitive and possibly win all three of those matchups.
No one is guaranteeing a playoff run with Browning under center, but Monday night showed that it is possible.
The Bengals live to fight another day. Their season is alive and so are their playoff chances.
Ja'Marr Chase
Chase was dominant on Monday night, finishing with 11 receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown. His 76-yard score set the tone for what was a wild second half. He also made two key catches in overtime.
Chase has 86 receptions for 1,063 yards and seven touchdowns this season. He's topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark in each of his first three NFL seasons.
He was targeted 12 times on Monday night. He's received double-digit targets in five of the Bengals' six wins. He hasn't been targeted 10 or more times in any of the Bengals' six losses.
Bottom line: Get the ball to Chase and good things happen.
Jakey Spin Rate
Browning looked calm, confident and was accurate on Monday night. He finished 32-of-37 for 354 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 22 yards and another score.
"Jakey Spin Rate" balled out against the Jaguars. It's unrealistic to expect that every week, but he showed he's capable of leading his team to a big primetime road win, even with the defense struggling.
Running Game
The Bengals ran for 156 yards on Monday night. Chase Brown and Joe Mixon combined for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Mixon finished with 68 yards on 19 attempts and both scores. He had a few carries at the end of overtime that hurt his overall average when the Jaguars knew Cincinnati was going to run the ball.
Brown brought some explosiveness to the ground game. His 31 yard run is a team-high for the Bengals this season. He also had a 15-yard run and showed he could be a perfect change of pace back for Mixon.
Running the ball efficiently is crucial for this offense. Brown and Mixon averaged 4.6 yards per carry combined and helped the offense stay balanced throughout the game.
