Jake Browning on Starting Debut Loss Against Steelers: 'Hard to Give a Generalized Answer'
CINCINNATI — Jake Browning (19-of-26 passing for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception) had an up and down debut as the Bengals starting quarterback in Sunday's 16-7 loss to Pittsburgh.
The backup quarterback tossed one interception and had a few more that were lucky not to get picked as Cincinnati tallied one of its lowest yardage totals of the season (223 yards).
Browning also took four sacks for 30 yards.
"I think that's always kind of hard to know until you watch the tape," Browning said on how he played. "It's hard to give a generalized answer. I think there were some (throws) where it was good to be aggressive and I think there were some where I could have just checked it down and maybe not taken some sacks. But I think part of me getting back into the groove of playing and stuff like that is kind of figuring out, 'Okay, where is that line for me? And where is that line in this offense? What is that line I need to play on in order to give us the best chance to win the game?'"
Cincinnati really needs to find a rushing attack to take some pressure off of Browning and not force him to create so much on his own. A 26-11 pass-run scenario with a backup quarterback is a tough strategy to win with.
