Bengals Burned By Two Veterans They Could've Added in Free Agency

Cincinnati is 5-4 following Sunday's loss to Houston.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — There has been plenty of talk about the Bengals running backs and tight ends this season. There was even more chatter about both positions eight months ago during free agency and ahead of the draft.

Two veterans that they could've targeted in free agency hurt them in Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Texans.

Dalton Schultz and Devin Singletary were forced to sign team-friendly one-year deals after the tight end market came to a screeching halt and the running back market was non-existent.

Both veterans signed with Houston on March 20 and 21, respectively. That was over a week after free agency opened.

Schultz would've been a plug-and-play starting tight end. He signed a one-year, $6.2 million deal. Singletary would've been an ideal backup behind Joe Mixon, especially on a one-year $2.75 million, which is what he signed for in Houston.

Singletary ran for a career-high 150 yards and one touchdown, averaging five yards-per-carry in the process. He's technically the Texans' backup running back behind Dameon Pierce, who didn't play on Sunday due to an ankle injury.

Schultz had four receptions for 71 yards, including multiple catches on third down that extended drives.

A lot of things went wrong for the Bengals on Sunday, but some of their issues started this offseason when they got worse at tight end and running back. There were quality options available. Schultz and Singletary are just two examples of veterans that could've helped this team.

And wondering why neither player ended up in Cincinnati isn't hindsight. There was plenty of chatter about how both guys would fit on this roster in March before they signed with the Texans. Give Houston credit for adding to their team and finding two veteran players that helped them
