CINCINNATI — The Bengals released veteran offensive lineman La'el Collins on Tuesday according to the NFL's transaction wire.  The team made the announcement shortly after the NFL released their end of day transactions.

The former Pro Bowler started 15 games for Cincinnati last season before suffering a torn ACL on Christmas Eve against the Patriots. He was on the physically unable to perform list throughout training camp and for the first week of the season.

Collins appeared to be the perfect insurance policy for right tackle Jonah Williams. He underwent knee reconstruction surgery in January.

Clearly the team felt like it was best to move on. This could have a lot to do with the salary cap following recent contract extensions for Joe Burrow, Logan Wilson and Trey Hendrickson.

The team could save $7.4 million in cap space with the move, but that’s dependent on the details of a potential injury settlement.

If they gave the veteran a settlement, that could cost up to $1.2 million in cap space. In that case, they'd save $5.2 million in cap space this season. They also save $7 million in cap space next season.
