Bills Combine: Bijan Robinson Confident in 'Special Quality' He Brings to NFL Draft
All eyes and ears were on Texas Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson when he took the podium at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Surely, the Buffalo Bills - who hold the No. 27 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft - were listening.
Ask anyone, and they'll tell you with uncontested confidence that Robinson is the best running back in the draft. There's little doubt that'll he be the first off the board at his position, and based on numerous projections and mock drafts, the Bills could be the team to make this happen.
But even for the humble and soft-spoken Robinson, he shares this same kind of confidence about himself.
"First of all, I feel like if you're a guy who can do all three for your offense, I think that's a very special quality for a player,'' Robinson said. "You line a player up at receiver, at slot or, obviously, at running back. Just creating mismatches all over the field and being able to create space for yourself ... that's a high value everybody should look at.''
While maintaining of sphere of humbleness, Robinson is sharing what he views as "special qualities" that define him as a player. Catching the ball out of the backfield, lining up as a receiver and, of course, pounding the rock are three things that Robinson has proven he can do and then some.
This could provide some much-needed help to a Bills backfield that hasn't had a 1,000-yard rusher since LeSean McCoy in 2017 and could be losing running back Devin Singletary to free agency.
When factoring in Robinson three listed qualities, there's a reason that, while also being named the nation's top running back as the 2022 Doak Walker winner, he led the nation with 1,894 total scrimmages yards (1,580 rushing, 314 receiving) and was second in total touchdowns (20). Add that to the fact that he was tops in the Big 12 in carries (258), rushing yards (1,580) and rushing touchdowns (18) during the regular season and you've got a running back that lives up to both the personal and outside billing.
It remains a mystery which team will take a first-round swing on Robinson. But despite the understandable stigma that comes with selecting a running back too early in the draft, it could prove to be unwise to pass on Robinson before its too late. The Bills could be the team hoping they don't make an oversight they regret.
Robinson and the rest of the running backs will perform combine drills on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
