Browns DC Jim Schwartz Talks About Myles Garrett, What to Expect From his Defense
One of the bright spots that came about when Jim Schwartz was hired to replace Joe Woods in Cleveland, was his background with defensive linemen. Schwartz seems to be chomping at the bit to get to work with one of the game's best pass rushers in Myles Garret.
"I'll have a little spot in my office that says, 'anything that gets Myles Garrett one-on-one is a good scheme," Schwartz said on the Cleveland Browns Daily.
"Ehhh he's a freak show. There's not many guys that have walked this planet thar have his size and his athletic ability.
Going on, Schwartz named what he thinks makes Garrett so special. The all-pro defensive end is coming off of his second straight season of 16 sacks.
"Just incredible balance, incredible bend, explosiveness, plays hard, productive, great guys for the quarterback -- it's really exciting. I've had some good ones and I think he has a chance to be at the top of that list."
That is high praise from Schwartz, who has coached the following defensive lineman: Albert Haynesworth (Titans, All-Pro in 2007 and 08), Marcell Dareus (Bills, 2014), Fletcher Cox (Eagles, 2018), and Ndamukong Suh (Lions, 2010 and2 014).
"Our scheme is very friendly for defensive linemen. We're not going to slow them down with a bunch of self, we're going to ask them to go create some havoc."
Along with the talented pass rusher, Schwartz is going to be able to deploy some young, talented cornerbacks. Denzel Ward is just 25 years old, the oldest of the tandem with Greg Newsome II and Martin Emerson Jr.
"I'm really excited about our corners. I'm really excited to work with the young corners they have here. I think that can put is in a good position."
Schwartz will have expectations for his defense next year to perform. Cleveland has to give him the pieces needed to do so on the defensive line specifically.
