Browns CB Greg Newsome II Retracts Tweets Regarding Former Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald
Following some interesting Tweets sent out by Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II regarding Northwestern firing Pat Fitzgerald, they’ve since been deleted. By deleting them it appears that Newsome has retracted what he had said about the situation.
“Nice knowing you Evanston won’t be seeing me NO more,” Newsome said on Twitter Monday before deleting it. Before that Tweet and even before ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news that Northwestern was firing Fitzgerald, Newsome had some more thoughts on the allegations.
“Ok now this is getting out of hand. Coach Fitz is a great man,” Newsome said on Twitter Monday. “During my time at NU I have never felt belittled or treated any different for being Black or a minority. Stop it.”
With Newsome retracting how he felt, it is likely that he didn’t want people to get the wrong message. Not to be speculative but it appears to be a situation of a player backing a guy who helped him make it to the NFL.
The hazing allegations are tough and they happened under the watch of Fitzgerald, so the dismissal was needed. But at the end of the day, the guys who made it to the NFL in part to Fitzgerald’s coaching should be understood. Newsome likely isn’t the only one that feels this way in terms of former Wildcats.
After all, it was probably best that Newsome stepped back from his stance, at least on social media.
