Browns Offensive Line Ranks Extremely High Heading into 2023 Season
It’s not often that an offensive line stays together as a unit for the most part for years upon years at a high level. It’s hard to do due to the price, as well as health. The Cleveland Browns have kept their unit together for some time now and continue to be elite.
Last season, health wasn’t on the Browns’ side. Center Ethan Pocic broke out as one of the best at his position in the NFL but he missed four games. Right tackle Jack Conklin missed three games, and right guard Wyatt Teller missed two games. Left tackle Jedrick Wills toughed it out through the entire season and the lower leg injuries had a negative effect on his play.
Cleveland’s unit wasn’t at its best last year — a lot of it was injuries involved — but they should bounce back in 2023. Heading into the season, Pro Football Focus has the Browns as the second-ranked offensive line unit in the NFL, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles. It seems to be a good spot for Bill Callahan’s group, he’s had them humming since he came to Cleveland in 2020.
There is some certain with the Browns’ offensive line. Left guard Joel Bitonio will be a great football player as he has been for the majority of his nine-year NFL career. He gave up just one sack last season and was a first-team All-Pro recipient for the second straight season.
Teller will continue to be among the league’s best as a run blocker. Questions fall on the tackles, if Conklin stays healthy he’s an exceptional piece outright. Wills needs a nice year if he wants a second contract in Cleveland, so he has that to play for. He’s shown he’s capable but the consistency has to be there.
As long as It wasn’t just a one-year wonder for Pocic, the Browns unit has the makings to be pretty darn good in 2023. They have the pleasure of making holes for one of the league’s best running backs Nick Chubb, and the offense should be more explosive as a whole with Deshaun Watson in his second season in Cleveland.
Going away, health will be the biggest factor and if the Browns avoid a catastrophe there, expect them to land near PFF’s ranking.
