New Bylaw on Quarterbacks on 53-man Roster Will Benefit Browns
When the Cleveland Browns selected QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson there was some negative feedback since he would take up a roster spot as a third quarterback on the 53-man. Browns Digest can confirm a report that an NFL bylaw has passed at league meetings that will allow a third quarterback on the roster that won’t count toward the 53-man on gameday.
Now, Cleveland can keep the rookie quarterback on the roster while maintaining some extra flexibility. The Browns can choose to keep an extra linebacker or safety if they choose to do so, something they maybe couldn’t afford to do before due to roster limitations.
In the past, we have seen teams run into situations where they’re simply down to nothing at quarterback due to only carrying a couple. Last season in the NFC Championship, RB Christian McCaffrey had to warm up at quarterback after Brock Purdy and their backup quarterback were both injured. Things like that should no longer have to happen with the new bylaw.
It’s good news for the folks in Berea and likely welcomed the news. Dorian Thompson-Robinson has no reason to touch the field in 2023, therefore he won’t have to count as a player on the 53-man on Sundays.
