Browns Sign Familiar Punter to Roster, Potential Camp Battle Awaits

Cleveland Browns look like they may want a punter competition in camp.
In this story:

Cleveland Browns are bringing P Joseph Charlton back to the team. Charlton, who spent training camp with the Browns in 2022, has been signed to a deal, according to the team.

Charlton has played in 22 games since being an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in 2020. Charlton started his career with the Carolina Panthers where he played in 16 games as a rookie. During the 2021 season, the punter appeared in six games between the Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Notably, Charlton was a part of Browns’ training camp as mentioned last year. He’s a player they’re familiar with in Berea and one they look like will have battle it out with Corey Bojorquez.

Charlton averages 44.3 yards per punt for his career and has nailed 42 percent of his punts inside the 20-yard line. Bojorquez punted it 48.5 yards per punt last year but the downfall was just 37 percent of his punts were placed inside the 20. It was a career-low, to say the least for Bojorquez.

In 2024, Bojorquez is scheduled to make $1.8 million with $250,000 in dead money if they chose to cut him for Charlton.

The new special team’s coach Bubba Ventrone may have some decisions to weigh in on for his unit during his first year on the staff.
