This Browns Offseason Standout may Surprise Some
Every offseason there are some surprise names that have a good camp and get you excited to see them when the season rolls around. ESPN’s Jake Trotter named wide receiver Marquise Goodwin as an offseason standout for the Browns and it is hard to disagree.
The Browns made a couple of noteworthy moves to upgrade their receiving corps this offseason, trading for Elijah Moore and drafting Cedric Tillman in the third round. Yet another under-the-radar addition, the 32-year-old Goodwin, dominated Cleveland's minicamp, flashing the downfield wheels that could make him an intriguing weapon for quarterback Deshaun Watson.
When asked about Goodwin's speed, Watson said, "It opens up other guys underneath ... the run game and also the intermediate and short game." Goodwin won't be a primary option, but he could be an impactful one. The Browns’ splash move at wide receiver was trading for Elijah Moore from the New York Jets. They also drafted Cedric Tillman out of Tennessee with their first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which came in the third round after Cleveland sent their second-round pick to the Jets. The addition of Goodwin was a bit overlooked for those reasons but he looked like he could be an important piece for this team in 2023.
Goodwin is 32 years old and on the back end of his career but he’s still one of the fastest players in the NFL. He runs a legit 4.3 in the 40-yard and that speed showed during OTAs. During OTAs, Goodwin took the tip off the defense multiple times for big touchdowns over the top. He’s a player you will have to account for every time he is on the field or you might just pay.
While he may be the fourth or fifth wideout in the rotation, Goodwin is set to have a role on the team. Some don’t believe he’s a roster lock at this point due to his contract makeup, but he showed everything he needed to during the offseason to be just that. Unless a crazy falloff or injury comes about in training camp he will be with the Browns in 2023.
While Deshaun Watson and Elijah Moore are a couple to name when it comes to having a nice offseason — it was Goodwin who needs to be mentioned as well — as he looks like a guy that could do good things for Cleveland this coming season.
