Cam Newton Names Browns QB Deshaun Watson as the No. 1 QB he Would Want to Backup

Cam Newton is a free agent but he says Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is the No. 1 quarterback he would want to backup.

Cleveland Browns already have their backup quarterback in Joshua Dobbs but one interesting name says he would like to backup Deshaun Watson.

Cam Newton is a free agent currently that has not played since 2021 when he appeared in eight games with the Carolina Panthers. During that time, Newton threw five interceptions to four touchdowns.

“I’d backup Deshaun Watson,” Newton said of who he’d want to backup.

He was on my 7-on-7 all-star team, and I’ve grown to admire the person, the athlete that he is. Going through a lot of turmoil that’s behind him, I know I can provide services for him on the field as well as off the field.”

Newton and Watson are friends off the field, in the past Watson has called Newton his “big brother”. The two have a similar play style of being able to make plays with their legs but that’s not to say that Newton isn’t past his prime.

There’s next to zero chance that the Browns would sign Newton right now, maybe ever. But this just goes to show the respect that Watson gets around the league, even from former MVP-caliber players.
