BREAKING: Commanders Sale Won't Finalize at NFL Spring League Meeting; What's Next?
The Washington Commanders' next era isn't starting just yet.
According to NFL.com, the league's owners will not vote on the approval of the sale from Dan and Tanya Snyder to new prospective owner Josh Harris at this month's owners' meetings.
The Snyders agreed in principle to a sale of the franchise to Harris last week, ending a 24-year ownership of the football team in Washington. However, in order for the sale to become official, at least 24 of the 32 NFL owners must approve it. There was a chance for the owners to vote on the sale later this month, but NFL executive vice president of communications Jeff Miller told NFL.com that "there are not going to be any votes at this time."
So, when can the Commanders' sale be approved if it won't be at these next owners' meetings?
Ideally, the league would prefer for the transaction to become official before the start of the season in September.
Last year, the league's owners came together for a "special meeting" to finalize the sale of the Denver Broncos, which could be a potential scenario for the Commanders. NFL insider Ian Rapoport says that a meeting could take place in "the coming months."
Even with this small "setback," the sale to Harris and his ownership group is still expected to be approved.
