'I’m Coming for Bosa!' Cowboys' Micah Parsons Reacts to 49ers Contract Move
Open the checkbook, Jerry.
The San Francisco 49ers made headlines on Wednesday by signing defensive end Nick Bosa to a five-year, $170 million extension. Of that, $122.5 million is guaranteed. Bosa, for now, is the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.
That is, until Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons signs his next contract.
Parsons, the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-Pro selection, has blossomed into one of the league’s best young players. He’ll become eligible for an extension next year. Thus, the Bosa extension won’t just put a dent in San Francisco’s cap space - it will set the floor for Parsons’ deal.
“I’m super happy for Nick Bosa,” Parsons said. “He really showed why he was the best player in the league last year, and it gives you something to chase.”
Naturally, attention shifted to the backed up Brink’s trucks and what it could mean for Parsons at the negotiating table. He could play hard ball, test the open market, or hold out until he gets the deal he desires. Frankly, it’d be hard to blame him. He’s finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting in each of his two seasons. In year three, he’s the favorite.
For now, though, he’s locked in on being the best Cowboy possible.
“Not in terms of his contract,” he continued. “But in terms of how great he was if you study his mindset, how patient he was.”
Bosa, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, led the league with 18.5 sacks in 2022. In the last two seasons, he has totaled 34 sacks, 80 quarterback hits, and 40 tackles for loss. In that same span, Parsons has 26.5 sacks, 56 quarterback hits, and 33 tackles for loss. Surrounding cast and usage murky those waters, but it’s clear that the pair are two of the league’s best.
As long as Parsons keeps exceeding expectations, the money will likely take care of itself. He doesn’t have to chase a new contract. Parsons can simply focus on chasing greatness.
“He knows that I’m coming for him,” Parsons concluded.
Parsons will have the chance to set himself apart on Sept. 10, when Dallas visits the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.
