Cowboys Trevon Diggs, NFL's Next Highest-Paid CB with New Contract?

Over his first three NFL seasons, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has racked up 195 tackles, 17 interceptions and been named a two-time Pro Bowler.

If and when Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs becomes a free agent next offseason, the two-time Pro Bowler will be getting paid.

And how much in a new deal? That depends not only on how much the front office is willing to shell out for the 2021 interception leader. ... but also when the Cowboys want to try to do it.

Per Spotrac, the 25-year-old Diggs' market value currently sits at $15.4 million and projects his next contract being a four-year $61.8 million deal.

In a recent piece by The Athletic, Jon Machota addressed the concerns of Dallas letting secondary pieces such as Chidobe Awuzie and Byron Jones walk due to high price tags.

“Diggs is in a different class than those other two. I’d be much more willing to pay him than Jones or Awuzie. And the Cowboys feel the same way,” Machota said in his latest. Q&A column. “Now, that doesn’t mean that the number couldn’t climb beyond Dallas’ comfort zone. I would expect him to be looking for something among the highest-paid at the position. So, that’s in the neighborhood of $20 million per year.”

One area of concern?

No. 1 wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has a fifth-year option in 2024 worth $19.8 million. ...

The same year Diggs becomes an unrestricted free agent.

CowboysSI.com has been told that the Cowboys are "considering'' a more proactive approach than usually here. Rather than allow Diggs to go to 2024 free agency (or be tagged), Dallas can preemptively re-up him before that time.

“You always look at something like that,” Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said on the duo in February. “Looking for the right opportunities, the right situation, obviously they’re in our plans long term. Always look.”

But what if it's not $15 million? What if the market value on Diggs is $20 million APY?

As two of the most promising young players in the league, Dallas will certainly have decisions to make come next offseason. ... or sooner.

For the time being, Diggs and Lamb will focus on helping the Cowboys reach its first NFC Championship game since 1996. But they can't be blamed for having one eye on that bag.
