Eagles DT Jordan Davis: Breakout Candidate with 'Essential Role'?
Despite being selected No. 13 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jordan Davis did not make an immediate impact on the roster last season.
Davis only started in five games for the Eagles in 2022, recording 18 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass breakup. The former Georgia Bulldog was sidelined by a high-ankle sprain midseason before returning for appearances in the NFC Divisional Round against the New York Giants and the NFC Championship game against the San Fransico 49ers.
It should be noted, however, that most of his playing time in the postseason came in the second half when the Eagles had secured double-digit leads.
While Davis was on injured reserve, Philadelphia brought in free agents Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph to fill the void, and the rookie was unable to regain his role on the defense.
Suh and Joseph are no longer on the roster heading into this season, however, which means Davis could be poised for a larger role along the Eagles' defensive line and possibly even a breakout season.
ESPN released the breakout candidates for this season and categorized Davis as a "rotation player" who is expected to become a "solid starter."
With Fletcher Cox and rookie first-round pick Jalen Carter also on the defensive line, Davis will not be expected to create pass-rushing opportunities. Instead, the 6-6, 336-pounder will be charged with improving Philadelphia's rush defense.
"The Eagles had the league's seventh-worst success rate on rush defense last season and were the league's worst defense in power situations," ESPN writes. "Davis can play an essential role in helping them firm up on the ground."
