Boyle No Better Than Wilson as Jets' Offense Shows More of the Same

The New York Jets were hoping for a spark, but settled for a dud.

After making multiple changes on offense, headlined by a starting quarterback switch, the Jets experienced a lot more of the same when hosting the Miami Dolphins in the first-ever NFL Black Friday Game.

In terms of yards per play, there was no difference in the Jets' offense from this week to last. Just as they did against the Bills, the Jets averaged 2.9 yards per offensive rep in their 34-13 loss to the Dolphins on November 24. Gang Green ran 55 total plays for 159 net yards one week after netting 155 yards on 54 snaps.

"We’ve got to keep digging. Have to keep preparing. We have to keep coaching. We have to keep playing. We just have to keep trying to find ways to move the ball and score," said head coach Robert Saleh after his Jets suffered their fourth straight defeat.

Only the New York Giants (4.13) and the Carolina Panthers (4.09) have fared worse than the Jets (4.41) when it comes to moving the football on a per play basis. With Tim Boyle replacing Zach Wilson at the controls, the offense's latest performance dropped the Green & White' to last place in the NFL for yards per game (260.2).

"Really, it's just to give him an opportunity to see if we can do something with the offense," said Saleh when making the change to Boyle.

It's only one game, but the results were the same. In fact, Boyle actually came up short of Wilson's season averages.

The 29-year-old Boyle averaged 4.7 yards per pass attempt with his longest completion going for 13 yards. According to NextGenStats, he attempted only four passes at least 10 air yards in length.

"There’s things that he could have done better. There’s things that he had no control over and I know he battled out there," said Saleh.

Boyle's quarterback rating for the game was a substandard 67.8.

Wilson, who was averaging 6.1 yards per attempt, owns a 73.8 passer rating through 10 games.

Although he has a quicker release, Boyle offers no mobility compared to Wilson. In what what his fourth career NFL start, he took seven sacks.

Meanwhile, the Jets used their eighth different starting offensive line combination against Miami and there's been a drop-off in production from the run game as well.

Jets' RB1 Breece Hall has been held under 30 rush yards for three games in a row.

"I feel like right now, I’m just trying to make a play. It’s been hard for me to get an open space and get some good looks. It’s a lot of guys pressing and stuff right now," said Hall.

Until the Jets fix some of the larger issues, the results will likely remain the same whether it's Boyle or Wilson taking the snaps.
