Jets' OTAs Heading into Final Four-Week Phase
Welcome to Phase 3 in the New York Jets' off-season program.
It's when the team activity begins to slightly resemble the game of football.
Both rookies and veterans will voluntarily convene for team practices over a four-week period that culminates with a mandatory minicamp set for June 13-15.
Per NFL guidelines, “Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or ‘OTAs’." Jets' voluntary OTAs are slated for May 22-23, May 25, May 30-31, June 2, June 5-6, June 8-9.
Despite stringent limitations on the type of activity that can take place, the Phase 3 OTAs provides an opportunity for the Jets' new personnel to acclimate themselves to their teammates and the organization's method of operation.
A player like WR1 Garrett Wilson can develop a rapport with recently-added starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers while also taking reps in new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's scheme.
There won't be any pads popping though.
Players won't wear pads, but helmets are allowed.
"No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted,” according to NFL Phase 3 rules.
There are issues to monitor during Phase 3, starting with which players will be present.
Will All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who is on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, make a surprise appearance? It's unlikely the Jets will see their defensive centerpiece in the building until a new contract agreement is reached.
Is Rodgers in it for the long haul? How much time will the 39-year old quarterback spend at OTAs? He knows the offensive scheme extremely well, having spent three seasons with Hackett in Green Bay, but it couldn't hurt to show a serious commitment to his new team in the form of voluntary attendance.
How far along in the recovery process are RB Breece Hall, OT Mekhi Becton and OL Alijah Vera-Tucker? All three players haven't played since undergoing surgery for season-ending injuries. Will they be moving fluidly during team workouts?
Jets' head coach Robert Saleh is scheduled to address reporters on Tuesday, May 23 at the team facility in Florham Park.
