Two Veterans Back Together at Jets' Practice; Wilson Remains Sidelined
It was right on cue for the National Football League's "Back Together Weekend."
For the first time since last summer in Green Bay, receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb were back in action together on the training camp practice field.
The New York Jets' two offseason veteran additions were healthy participants during Sunday's session (Practice No. 8), which was open to spectators in Florham Park.
Lazard made his return from the "muscle tightness" that kept him out of the last three practices. He was spotted wearing a sleeve on his left leg earlier in the week.
Showing no signs of injury, Lazard made an impressive touchdown reception late in practice. On a play that started at the opponent's 16-yard line, the 6-foot-5 red-zone target "Mossed" safety Jordan Whitehead in the front right corner of the end zone.
On a later series, Lazard dropped a seemingly well-placed ball about 20 yards down the right sideline. Prior to signing a four-year contract, reportedly worth $44 million, with the Jets, the former undrafted prospect led the Packers in receptions (60) and receiving yards (788) last season.
Meanwhile, Cobb made his training camp debut on Sunday after beginning the preseason on the physically unable to perform list. The Jets officially activated the 13th-year veteran from PUP, allowing him to practice in pads for the first time with his new team.
Cobb had been working his way back from offseason ankle surgery, but he wasn't expected to remain unavailable much longer. Now, he's re-connected with his longtime quarterback, and personal friend, Aaron Rodgers in an NFL Training Camp.
Cobb has spent 10 of his 12 pro seasons with Rodgers as a teammate.
WR1 Wilson Sits
While two receivers returned to the practice field, second-year pro Garrett Wilson remained on the sidelines on Sunday.
The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year left Thursday's session after injuring his ankle while pursuing a pass downfield.
Robert Saleh wasn't overly concerned shortly after the injury occurred and that remained the case while the Jets' third-year head coach addressed reporters on Sunday afternoon.
"He's dealing with a low ankle, so we're just being cautious with him," said Saleh after Sunday's practice. "Give him a couple days to recover.'
The Jets will hold practices on Monday and Tuesday before heading to Canton for Thursday's Hall of Fame Game (Aug. 3) against the Cleveland Browns.
