Saleh on Rodgers: Don't Hold Your Breath
New York Jets' head coach Robert Saleh hasn't announced his decision on who will be the team's starting quarterback in Week 14, but he hinted that it won't be Aaron Rodgers.
The 40-year-old Rodgers, who ruptured his Achilles fewer than three months ago in the season opener, entered his 21-day activation window last week. As a result of the designation, he can practice while remaining on Injured Reserve for the time being. The future Hall-of-Fame field general logged two limited practices thus far.
As for Rodgers, who hasn't ruled out a return to game action this season, being ready to return in time for the December 10 home game against the Houston Texans, Saleh all but dismissed the idea as unfeasible.
"I'm gonna piggyback on what he told you guys in that anything's possible, but don't hold your breath," said Saleh with a chuckle on Monday afternoon.
Saleh claimed that the benched Zach Wilson "wants the ball." Not ready to name a starter for this upcoming Sunday, the head coach explained the rationale behind the decision-making process.
"I want to make sure nobody is acting emotionally. I want to make sure we’re making the right decision for this organization and team moving forward," said Saleh. "It’s who gives us the best chance to win. It’s that simple."
The Jets' offense continued to struggle even with Tim Boyle at the controls, scoring only one touchdown over his two starts. Overall, the team has registered 10 offensive touchdowns through 12 games. Their 14.3 points per game average ranks 30th out of 32 teams.
While the immediate choice seems to be between Wilson, Boyle and Trevor Siemian, Rodgers continues to progress through his rehabilitation at an unprecedented rate.
Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP has passed for 59,055 career yards. He has thrown 475 touchdown passes and 105 interceptions. The 19-year NFL veteran turned 40 on December 2. One day later, Rodgers was on the sideline for the duration of the Week 13 loss to Atlanta.
