Rodgers’ Next-Team Odds Change Again; Sportsbook Explains Why

Why do the next-team odds for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers continue to evolve?
In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The New York Jets, perhaps the logical front-runner if not the betting favorite to acquire Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, have closed the gap in the latest update by DraftKings Sportsbook.

In new odds that were live on Saturday morning, the Las Vegas Raiders remain the favorite at -350. The Packers’ odds lengthened from +175 on Friday to +225. The Jets, who were practically a coin flip with the Packers a couple weeks ago, had fallen to +600 but closed to +450 in the update.

The Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts, two teams who’ve been on the fringes despite their obvious needs at the position, had their odd shorten to +1800.

By implied probability, the Raiders are 77.8 percent, the Packers are 30.8 percent and the Jets are 18.2 percent. The Commanders, Buccaneers and Colts are 5.3 percent. (More teams in the accompanying video.)

Why the daily shifts?

“We put them up based on the information that we know, and that’s social media, any stories out there,” Johnny Avello, DraftKings’ director of race and sportsbook, said from Arizona on Friday. “We’re scouring for it constantly. We’ll move it on different stories, we’ll move it on bets.

“The Packers opened up a small favorite and the Jets were close behind. Now, all of a sudden, the Raiders are getting this monster push on bets and chatter. So, they’re a pretty good-sized favorite at -350, which is put up $350 to win $100. That’s a prohibitive favorite.”

A one-word tweet and more expansive comments by Raiders receiver Davante Adams are reasons why the Raiders are such heavy favorites.

“If he wants him, he’s probably talking to the front office, also. We have to react to that,” Avello said. “It’s not like we’re not going to make some crazy move off of that, but we do have to react. We have to watch anything out there that’s going to swing things toward a certain team.”

At one point, the Packers were +600 to retain Rodgers. Bettors saw value there and put money on Green Bay, which caused their odds to shorten.

The Jets’ odds shortened, too, based on comments by owner Woody Johnson at NFL Honors.

“We are going to look for an experienced quarterback to come in and help us and help develop these other young players,” he told ESPN.com’s Dianna Russini.

“You want the best quarterback that you can get to lead the Jets. I think with a good quarterback and our great defense – and the defense will be a lot better with a quarterback that’s actually doing it – it’s plug and play. If a quarterback comes in, it’s kind of an ideal situation.”

At PointsBet Sportsbook, Rodgers at +200 is the betting favorite to be the Jets’ Week 1 starter.

In individual-team markets at SportsBetting.ag, Rodgers remains the favorite to be the starter for two teams.
