Seahawks 90-Man Countdown: TE Tyler Mabry - More Juice For Tight End Group?
With the calendar flipping to June and offseason activities wrapping up league-wide, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC in less than two months, officially ushering in the 2023 season.
To celebrate the new incoming season, we'll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, exploring best and worst case scenarios and what to expect from each player entering the 2023 campaign.
Tyler Mabry, Tight End
Height/Weight: 6-3, 247 pounds
2022 Stats: One reception, seven yards, one touchdown
Known more for his blocking ability than pass-catching skills coming out of Maryland with just 73 receptions to his name in 40 college games, Mabry joined the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and spent the entirety of his first year in the NFL on the practice squad. With Colby Parkinson and Greg Olsen nursing injuries during the 2021 season, he played in six regular season games, primarily checking in to run block on offense and contribute on special teams.
Following the arrival of Noah Fant via trade, Mabry once again found himself as the odd man out in a talented tight end group as Seattle released him at the end of the preseason and re-signed him to the practice squad. Dressing for two games at the end of the season, he turned his first career NFL reception into a touchdown from Geno Smith in a Week 17 home win over the Jets.
Best-Case Scenario: Despite having three quality veterans ahead of him, Mabry shows enough improvement as a blocker and special teams player during training camp and the preseason to secure one of the final spots on the 53-man roster, avoiding going back to the practice squad for a fourth straight season.
Worst-Case Scenario: Unable to climb the depth chart latter and feverishly fending off a pair of quality undrafted rookies in Griffin Hebert and Noah Gindorff, Mabry once again gets cut at the end of the preseason and with younger options ready to develop, Seattle doesn't re-sign him to the practice squad.
What to Expect in 2023: When granted the opportunity to play over the past couple of seasons, Mabry has made the most of his chances, including catching a touchdown on one of his five offensive snaps for the entire 2022 season. Along with steadily getting better in the blocking department, he's a solid special teams player who helped spring Godwin Igwebuike on a few nice kick returns late last season and can also cover punts and kickoffs in a pinch.
However, as has been the case since he first joined the Seahawks in 2020, Mabry doesn't have a clear road to a roster spot with Will Dissly, Fant, and Parkinson all returning as key pieces on offense. If he can stand out as one of the team's better special teams assets this summer and make a few plays in the preseason as a receiver, it's possible he could breakthrough and finally crack the initial 53 as a fourth tight end, but he may need an injury ahead of him to have a legitimate shot due to the overall talent at the position.
