Former Player Addresses Aaron Donald to Steelers Rumors
PITTSBURGH -- Is Aaron Donald a real option for the Pittsburgh Steelers? After one bold prediction sparked the conversation that the Los Angeles Rams could put the All-Pro defensive lineman on the trading block this season, a return to Pittsburgh became an immediate headline.
Not everyone agrees with it, though. While there's some optimism the Steelers would be on board a move for the hometown star, one former player doesn't see how the deal works out for both sides.
During his latest episode of the Arthur Moats Experience, the former Steelers linebacker brought up the Donald noise.
"How does this fit? How does that work? Who's getting got? Are the Rams gonna say, 'Hey, we're gonna do a fire sale and take on all of AD's contract?' Nah, I don't know, man," Moats said. "You take the bag, we take the player."
Donald is set to hold a $26 million cap hit this season with $59.5 million in dead money. His current deal has an opt-out in 2024, but this season, someone is going to pay him big money.
The Steelers don't have $26 million sitting around in cap space, but they could use some magic to make it work. LA would take on nearly half of the number by Week 8 when the trade deadline comes around, and may be willing to hold onto more for the right offer.
That being said, maybe Pittsburgh isn't inclined to give up major compensation for a player they can only afford for one season. Or, maybe they see it as the last piece to the puzzle for their Super Bowl run.
Those questions won't be answered until the trade deadline comes and goes - or an Aaron Donald move is made elsewhere.
