Steelers HC Mike Tomlin Replies to 'Fire Canada' Chants

The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach heard the message loud and clear.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers fans did not hold back during the team's Week 2 home game, letting everyone know right from the jump that they were unhappy with the offense. But in the fourth quarter, after the team failed to convert on a game-sealing third down, Steelers Nation opened up with the loudest chant of the game.

"Fire Canada" filled Acrisure Stadium, in unison, as fans erupted in displeasure as the punt unit came back onto the field. Quarterback Kenny Pickett and wide receiver George Pickens said afterward they didn't hear it, but head coach Mike Tomlin did.

During his weekly press conference, Tomlin acknowledged the fans' distaste for offensive coordinator Matt Canada, but said the team isn't running from the fans' opinions.

"I appreciate their passion. I share their passion, we all do," Tomlin said. "I love our fans, they inspire us, they challenge us, it’s an awesome relationship. We don’t run from challenges, we run to challenges. This is the sport entertainment business. It is our job to win and thus entertain them. So we don’t begrudge them for that. We want them to be fat and sassy and spoiled. It is our job."

While Tomlin heard the fans, and even discussed how the offensive struggles are becoming a concerning pattern, he still feels confident in his coordinator.

"I don’t share their concern because of my perspective. I’m a part of the process, when you’re apart of the process, it’s less troublesome to you," Tomlin said.

For now, Tomlin said the team will not make any "knee-jerk reactions," but is working to fix the problem.
