Mike Tomlin Rips Steelers After Embarrassing Loss
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers' 30-13 loss on the road to the Indianapolis Colts didn't require particularly extensive or thoughtful analysis, but it did require honesty and that's what head coach Mike Tomlin delivered in his postgame press conference.
“All right man, let’s be honest - we’re a fundamentally poor football group right now," Tomlin said. "We’re playing losing football and I take responsibility for that."
Tomlin went on to describe the painful details of what "losing football" entails. There are basic parts of the game that the Steelers are struggling to do effectively right now and that simple reason is why they have lost three weeks in a row.
"By losing football, I mean we’re just not doing fundamental things well enough," he said. "We’re just not. We’re turning the ball over, we’re highly penalized, we don’t play good in situations and I’m just acknowledging that."
Taking a defeated tone, Tomlin said that he doesn't have the answers to the Steelers' ills right now, but that they will work tirelessly to find solutions over the next seven days and three weeks before the regular season ends.
A playoff berth is falling further and further from their reach and the Steelers need to turn things around quickly to salvage a miserable season. But for right now all the Steelers' head coach could do was give his frank assessment of a poor afternoon at the office.
"If I had the answers, we would have played differently today. But I will acknowledge things won’t continue the way they are," Tomlin said. "We’re not going to keep doing the things that we’re doing and hoping for the same result. And so we’ve got a seven-day turnaround, we’ll see what those seven days hold for us but I’m just acknowledging right now that we’re playing losing football and I own that. Not a good day.”
