Minkah Fitzpatrick Named Steelers Player Who Should Wear Number Zero
PITTSBURGH -- The NFL will now allow players to wear the number zero heading into the 2023 season, and immediately upon the rule change, the questions on who should wear it for the Pittsburgh Steelers began.
Asking on Twitter, the response from many Steelers fans was George Pickens, but Sports Illustrated has a different view of the idea.
To SI's Gilberto Manzano, there needs to be a code with the new number, and coach Deion Sanders said it best, "You gotta earn the cold numbers, as the kids say," Manzano writes.
So, in Pittsburgh, there's really only one option. Since defensive and offensive linemen can't dawn the numbers, Manzano says the player who should switch this season is Minkah Fitzpatrick.
"One of the best defensive playmakers in the NFL is deserving of the zero jersey," Manzano writes.
Fitzpatrick does feel like the right defender to take on the number, but even he's said he like that he turned an "ugly number" in 39 into a popular one.
Should we expect any Steeler to take on zero this season? Possibly, but in Pittsburgh, they don't like to put too much attention into jersey numbers. So, for now, it's a maybe at best.
