NFL Analyst Unsure if Patrick Peterson Works With Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are already starting to utilize Patrick Peterson is a number of ways to try and find his best fit within their defense. But because of the team's scheme outlook in the secondary, one NFL analyst doesn't believe the veteran will work out as well as many believe in the black and gold.
Film guru Greg Cosell appeared on a recent episode of the Ross Tucker Podcast and discussed a number of Pittsburgh Steelers topics, including Peterson's fit within the secondary.
Unfortunately, because of Pittsburgh's man-heavy scheme with their cornerbacks, Cosell doesn't know if Peterson is going to be able to work as well as the Steelers hope.
"I'm very curious to see on defense what their mix of man and zone is," Cosell said. "I don't know if Patrick Peterson, at this point in his career, can line up and play heavy many coverage. So I'm very curious to see how they choose to play on the backend in those critical situations."
Peterson is going to play both inside and outside for the Steelers, with Joey Porter Jr. likely coming in to fill the outside role across from Levi Wallace. Peterson said the move to the inside will "slow the game down" for him, allowing him to use his football I.Q. and physicality more as an aging veteran.
At 32 years old, there will be questions about any cornerback. A future Hall of Famer gets a nod most of the time, but coming from Minnesota's zone-heavy defense, it is a question we'll have to wait on an answer for about making the change.
