Steelers Land Two Big Name Offensive Linemen in Latest Mock Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers attack the offensive side of the ball in the most recent mock draft.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have been a team heavily expected to pursue their defense during the 2023 NFL Draft, but in CBS Sports' latest mock, they make a change for the offense.

In CBS Sports' most recent three-round mock draft, the Steelers go all offense, starting with offensive tackle out of Northwestern, Peter Skoronski at pick 17.

"The Steelers go with the super-versatile Skoronski with some of the cleanest pass-protection film in the class," CBS Sports writes.

The Steelers leave some very impressive names on the board at 17, choosing Skoronski over Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, edge rusher Nolan Smith, Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee.

From there, Pittsburgh sticks to their offensive gameplan, landing North Carolina wide receiver Josh Downs at pick 32. All Steelers actually had the same pick after Downs impressed the Steelers during his Pro Day.

At pick 49, the Steelers actually go to the defensive side of the ball, selecting Pitt defensive tackle Calijah Kancey. And at 80, Pittsburgh goes back to their offensive line with Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz.

While the Steelers offensive line takes a significant jump in this draft, they do leave cornerback on the table heading into the fourth round. Most mocks project Pittsburgh selecting a corner in the first two picks, but with Patrick Peterson on the roster for the next two years, the team could draft a more developmental piece to add to the room.

As of the additions of Skoronski and Schmitz, the Steelers would be near the end of building their offensive line. As long as both players developed, the team would have replaced their left guard, left tackle and center during the offseason, with James Daniels and Chuks Okorafor looking to be with the team long-term.
