Steelers WR Calvin Austin Burns Patrick Peterson
PITTSBURGH -- Through two weeks of Pittsburgh Steelers OTAs, the star of the show has been second-year wideout Calvin Austin. After returning from injury, the speedy receiver has received compliments from his quarterback, fellow wide receivers and some rookies - and you can now add a future Hall of Fame cornerback to the list.
During the latest episode of the All Things Covered podcast, Steelers cornerback and co-host Patrick Peterson told the story of his first encounter with Austin on the field.
The two matched up during practice and Peterson learned pretty quickly what makes Austin so special.
"I ain’t ever seen Austin before," Peterson said. "All I know is he’s a little guy and he’s outside. If he’s a little guy outside, he must got wheels. But I’ve never seen him in action. He made a little move, he may have gotten an arm length ahead of me. But I ended up giving him one of my tug and pulls to get me back in position to make the play."
During the film review after practice, Peterson got a second look at the play.
"Coach Grady Brown comes back in film, ‘We all owe Pat P an apology. We didn’t tell him 19 had wheels like this,'" Peterson said.
"I said, ‘You dang on right, ya’ll owe me an apology,'" he continued. "I’m in Year 13, got a million miles on the tires and y’all ain’t even tell me this man runs a 4.2."
Austin is expected to be a key contributor to the Steelers offense as he returns from a foot injury that ended his rookie season before it started. The fourth-round pick should be utilized in a number of ways, and have plenty of opportunities this year to show off his speed.
And if he's impressing a future Hall of Famer in Peterson, imagine what he'll be capable of against other corners in the league.
"That joker's fast." - Pat P.
