PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers lost tight end Connor Heyward in the opening quarter of their final preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Heyward ran off the field without picking up his right arm after a run the first quarter. The utility player was working in the backfield and took a handoff to the right for three yards. After being helped up, he jogged off and was immediately met by the team doctor, who brought him to the medical tent for further evaluation.

Heyward has been a key piece to the Steelers offense this summer, working at tight end, fullback, running back and wide receiver. He's expected to contribute at all positions in his second season.

It's unknown what the exact injury is for Heyward. According to Steelers Now's Alan Saunders, Heyward was "gesturing toward his hand" after leaving the medical tent.

All Steelers will continue to provide updates as the team releases more information.

UPDATE: Heyward has returned to the field after further evaluation.
