Steelers Could Bring Back Veteran to Solve CB Problem
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have a cornerback issue. Right now, the team has their two starters and a primary backup in Joey Porter Jr., but afterward, things get complicated.
The struggles of James Pierre and Luq Barcoo have been very noticeable. Both came into the summer with strong opportunities to earn the final roster spot, but neither have done so. In reality, the Steelers should be looking elsewhere to replace both of them.
The question is, with whom? Well, one former member of the team is gaining interest around the league and may be an option if all else fails.
William Jackson III has worked out for the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants as of late, but has not signed a contract anywhere. The former Cincinnati Bengal and Washington Commander made his way to Pittsburgh in Week 8 of last season, but practiced just one week before landing on Injured Reserve with a lingering back issue.
It's unknown how healthy Jackson is, but if he can suit up for a season, the Steelers may need to make a phone call.
Jackson is a proven starter in the NFL when healthy, but at this point in his career, he's likely just looking for a spot on a team. If he can play, he's a much better option than what the Steelers are working with, and they shouldn't take it lightly that their depth at the position is scarce.
With a 33-year-old starter in Patrick Peterson and a rookie backup in Porter Jr., having a bigger name as a depth piece makes a lot of sense for the Steelers.
They'd have to test out his back, but if he can show he's ready to play again, maybe the Steelers give him a deal.
