Steelers Shut Down Safety Before Playoff Game
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed safety Trenton Thompson on Injured Reserve with a neck injury and have followed the move by activating safety Damontae Kazee from his suspension back to the 53-man roster.
Thompson joined the team in the middle of the season to replace several injuries at the position. After multiple call-ups from the practice squad, he was signed to the active roster, where he spent the rest of the year.
Thompson played six games this season, including one start, and recorded 22 tackles, three pass deflections and an interception. He hasn't played since Week 15 when he suffered the injury.
Kazee's return will help boost a battered safety room for the Steelers. Head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will evaluate his conditioning throughout the practice week to decide on his availability for their Wild Card matchup with the Buffalo Bills.
The team is also expecting to get Minkah Fitzpatrick back from his knee injury, leaving them with Kazee, Fitzpatrick and Eric Rowe as potential starters, with Elijah Riley and Miles Killebrew as their backups, and Patrick Peterson available to move back from cornerback.
