Steelers QB Situation Unclear for Bengals Game

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin doesn't know who will start next week.

PITTSBURGH -- On the heels of an embarrassing loss to the Indianapolis Colts in which the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't score for the final 34:07 of regulation, head coach Mike Tomlin didn't have much to offer in the way of analysis or explanations for his team's poor play.

Tomlin also didn't have any answers when asked who will start at quarterback for the Steelers next week when they host the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium.

"I don't have answers as I sit here right now," Tomlin said. "I know that we better do some things differently. We better approach some things differently. We're not going to roll that ball out there like that next week."

There are some complicated dynamics at work in the Steelers' quarterback room right now.

Mitch Trubisky, making his second consecutive start in place of the injured Kenny Pickett, completed 16 of 23 passes doe 169 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before he was benched late in the fourth quarter for Mason Rudolph. When asked about Trubisky's performance against the Colts, Tomlin deflected blame towards himself.

"None of us were good enough," Tomlin said. "Starting first and foremost with myself."

Rudolph threw just three passes and completed two for three yards during his lone series on the field.

Trubisky's benching might indicate that Tomlin is keeping an open mind about which player gives him the better chance of winning moving forward.

But the Steelers also could get Pickett back as soon as next week. He was expected to miss up to four games as he recovers from an ankle injury. Now it could be just three weeks between his injury and return to the field.

A comeback for Pickett would make Tomlin's life easier in multiple ways but if that doesn't happen, he'll have a difficult choice to make between Trubisky and Rudolph.
