Texans at Bottom of ESPN Way-Too-Early Power Rankings

Despite four new hires on DeMeco Ryans' coaching staff, the Houston Texans are at the bottom of ESPN's way-too-early power rankings.
In this story:

After winning just three games this season, the Houston Texans have something to prove.

Their recent coaching hires of DeMeco Ryans, Bobby Slowik, Nick 'DJ' Kray and Klint Kubiak were all necessary changes.

But despite an obvious change of pace for the Texans, the general opinion of the AFC South team has not wavered. Entering the 2023-24 season, ESPN has them ranked last place in its way-too-early NFL power rankings.

And the three-word phrase the site used to describe the team's offseason needs?

"Get a quarterback".

While it is safe to say that doing so is at the top of Houston's to-do list, its foundation is starting to be built. Ryans and newly-hired Matt Burke will handle the defensive side of things, while Slowik and Kubiak will help the offense to improve after ranking next-to-last in scoring, which starts with rookies.

This past season, the Texans ranked first in total snaps by rookies — headlined by safety Jalen Pitre and running back Dameon Pierce, both of which exceeded expectations.

Draft talks have increased as well. Barring a trade up or down, Houston will pick second in the 2023 Draft — likely taking a quarterback like Alabama's Bryce Young or Kentucky's Will Levis — to add another rookie to its team.

Regardless of power rankings, the Texans are likely to be focused on themselves, bringing in an almost entirely new coaching staff, which they hope will help them turn a corner.

Houston has gotten off to a strong start to its offseason with a new coaching staff, though it still has a long way to go ahead of the draft and next season. But the players and fans are motivated by their new head coach, who is out to prove that his team is up and coming.
