Football Nerds Will Enjoy Saturday, but No Answers Really
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — If you're not a football nerd, whatever they want to call Saturday's final Red-White practice will just be a chance to cheer.
Whether it's going to be a game or not, there won't a whole lot of drama or answers to anything.
With Jalen Catalon sitting out the spring game with Texas (they have a lot more people folks will be watching, anyway) and the Taurean Carter situation settled here, there's not really any drama over that.
It will be a technical display more than anything.
Oh, there will probably be some wrinkles for fans with maybe more long passes called or something that fans really enjoy, but not much else.
Those wrinkles could be interesting for some nerds.
Oh, and looking to see if they do any more than run some drills they've worked on in position drills that would be interesting to see in a game. A few things in there we haven't seen in nearly two decades, but that could just be a practice drill.
No score will be kept so there won't be any of that good-natured team gambling going on that got highly entertaining at times.
About 40 years ago at the coin toss before a Red-White game, one of the players grabbed the exposed belly of an opposing player and yelled "Jump Ball!" before calling the toss. Yes, it was at midfield and everybody heard it.
This game will be good to see if there's been any coaching development like quarterback KJ Jefferson's opening his hips a little better on quick outs that end up looking like a shortstop's side-arm throw.
Or whether the secondary can cover anybody on their own team, which should be much easier than covering folks in the SEC every week.
For a defense that got torched at times last year in a day and age where throwing the ball is required to win a championship.
Don't be surprised to see a lot of things different for the season opener down in Little Rock on Labor Day weekend in September.
That's how practices work, which is precisely what we expect to see.
