UC, John Brannen Settle Lawsuit
CINCINNATI — UC and former men's basketball head coach John Brannen have settled for an undisclosed figure. Brannen and the school were embroiled in a lawsuit brought on by the coach after the school fired him for cause in 2021.
“John Brannen and the University of Cincinnati have reached an amicable resolution," A press release stated. "Both parties look forward to putting this matter behind them and focusing on the future.”
UPDATE: According to The Athletic's Justin Williams, the school is paying Brannen $2.75 million as part of the settlement.
Brannen filed his first lawsuit saying his administrative leave and subsequent termination were the “result of a sham ‘investigation’ that was unfair, unreliable and inherently flawed and nothing more than a smokescreen to avoid triggering a contractual buyout clause that would have cost the University millions of dollars.”
The coach oversaw a mass exodus of players from his program amidst UC's stance that Brannen failed to "promote an atmosphere of compliance."
He then filed a second lawsuit, this time in Ohio, after UC athletic director John Cunningham and UC president Neville Pinto filed a motion to dismiss the first lawsuit. Both Cunningham and Pinto were dropped as defendants in the second legal matter.
Now, all of that is behind them as UC moves on with the Wes Miller era, and Brannen gets set to join Anthony Grant's coaching staff at the University of Dayton.
