Derek Stingley Goes Ahead of Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner in Latest Mock Draft
CINCINNATI — Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner is expected to be one of the first players taken in this months NFL Draft.
The 21-year-old is considered by many to be the top cornerback in this class.
The New York Giants ultimately take Gardner with the fifth overall pick in Pro Football Focus' latest mock draft, which isn't shocking. The big surprise comes earlier in the draft when LSU cornerback Derek Stingley is taken by the Texans at No. 3 overall.
Gardner is ranked ahead of Stingley on most big boards, but he gets taken two picks later.
"Gardner allowed just 131 yards across 14 games and 482 coverage snaps in 2021, a performance that will forever be known as one of the best ever seasons by a college defensive back," Anthony Treash wrote. "Impressively, the 6-foot-3, 190-pounder did that while playing mainly on an island in press-man coverage. He closed out his three-year college career without allowing a single touchdown despite playing over 1,100 coverage snaps. New defensive coordinator Wink Martindale will be able to trust him to win on an island sooner rather than later."
Being taken fifth overall would be awesome for Gardner and the Bearcats, but Stingley leap frogging him would be a surprise—especially since the LSU star is coming off of an injury.
