GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida sophomore running back Trevor Etienne entered the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday following two seasons with the Gators, he announced via Instagram.

One of the first prospects head coach Billy Napier signed upon his Dec. 2021 hiring by UF and a key cog in the team's rushing success ever since, Etienne's imminent departure serves as a devastating blow to the future of Florida's offense.

"Trevor is one of our best. He's not only one of the best competitors and players that we have, but he's also one of the better young men in our program," Napier said on Nov. 12. "His leadership, his work habits, the way he treats people, I mean he's a class act. He's been raised the right way, and he's an elite competitor."

A product of Jennings (La.) High from the recruiting class of 2022, Etienne signed with Florida over his home-state school LSU and the program his brother, now Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, attended, Clemson.

The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Etienne quickly made a name for himself in orange and blue, taking the field in each of Florida's 13 games and averaging nearly 10 total offensive touches during his freshman campaign, showcasing an elusive rushing skill set with a knack for making defenders miss and creating explosive plays.

However, Etienne's utilization increased only marginally during his sophomore season, with his touches-per-game count rising to 13.8 over 11 appearances, in a continual rotation with junior running back Montrell Johnson Jr. Etienne netted 15+ rushes and/or receptions in a game just four times in 2023.

Etienne finishes his two-year Florida career having rushed 249 times for 1,472 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per attempt, and 14 touchdowns, with 30 receptions for 238 yards and a score added in the passing game. He also averaged 24.8 yards per attempt over 26 kickoff returns.

In total, Etienne appeared in 24 games with the Gators, making his first career start in the 2023 season finale against Florida State.

Etienne is the 15th Florida player to either enter the transfer portal this offseason or have known plans to do so.

He chronologically follows defensive back Jadarrius Perkins, offensive tackle Jordan Herman, tight end Jonathan Odom, kicker Adam Mihalek, defensive back Kamari Wilson, defensive lineman Will Norman, quarterback Max Brown, wide receiver Caleb Douglas, wide receiver Thai Chiaokhiao-Bowman, defensive lineman Keenan Landry, tight end Andrew Savaiinaea, defensive lineman Chris McClellan, offensive lineman Jalen Farmer and edge rusher Princely Umanmielen

This is a breaking story that will be updated as further details emerge.
