Pair of Home Runs Pushes Boston College Past Georgia Tech in Game Two
It was hard to ask for a better start to the series against the No. 14 team in the country than the one Georgia Tech got yesterday. Luke Schmolke had his best pitching performance of the season yesterday and the offense did enough to get the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 victory. Things got a little closer than GT would have liked at the end, but they pulled out a win against a really good Boston College team on the road to get the series started.
Today was going to be a tough challenge as well for Georgia Tech. They were facing Chris Flynn, who came into this game 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA. Flynn is a very good pitcher and the Yellow Jackets' offense had their work cut out for them.
Jackson Finley was on the mound for Georgia Tech today and here is how the Yellow Jackets lined up:
1. CF- Jake DeLeo
2 IF- Kristian Campbell
3. RF- Stephen Reid
4. 1B- Angelo Dispigna
5. DH- Jackson Finley
6. 3B- Drew Compton
7. 2B- Nicholas Romano
8. SS- Jadyn Jackson
9. C- Tyler Minnick
Georgia Tech got a single from Campbell and a walk from Dispigna to give them two runners on in the first inning, but Finley struck out swinging to end the inning.
Finley got off to a strong start in the first, striking out two batters, but he ran into a bit of trouble in the 2nd.
After Georgia Tech's offense went down 1-2-3 in the 2nd, Tech made some changes. Compton came out of the game and Brandon Prince took his place. Romano went to third and Campbell to IF. Finley gave up a leadoff single and then a walk but got out of the inning with a couple of more strikeouts.
Georgia Tech had a great opportunity to score the first runs of the game in the top of the third. After two quick outs, Campbell hit another single and both Reid and Dispigna walked. Finley had a chance to come up and break the game open, but he struck out swinging to send it to the bottom of the third.
With Georgia Tech not taking advantage of the bases being loaded, that left the door open for Boston College to strike first and they did.
BC hit a solo home run to start the bottom of the third to get the first run on the board. Finley got out of the rest of the inning without giving up anymore, but the runners left on base came back to haunt Georgia Tech, which has been an issue this season.
Both teams went scoreless in the 4th inning and GT could not advance Campbell after he singled again.
Boston College had a ground out and then a single to put a runner on. The next batter grounded into a fielders choice and GT had two outs and looked like they were going to exit the 5th inning still only down one run. A 2-run home run from Travis Honeyman extended the Eagle's lead to 3-0. Finley's only runs allowed all game came on the two home runs.
Still, with the offense that GT possesses, a three-run deficit is not impossible to overcome.
Dispigna got the 6th inning going with a leadoff single and then Finley reached on a fielders choice that got Dispigna out at second. After Prince flew out, Romano came to bat and got an RBI double to get the Jackets on the board and they trailed 3-1. That was the only run they got though in the inning and the game.
Finley was replaced by Aeden Finateri and he was very good in this game and started off by pitching a scoreless sixth inning.
Jack Rubenstein came in to pinch hit in place of Minnick and struck out in his first at-bat. GT had a chance after DeLeo singled, but he was out at second after he got caught stealing and that was it for GT in the 7th.
Boston College threatened to add more runs in the 7th. A pair of singles and then an error put runners on second and third with two outs, but Finateri forced a ground out to end the inning.
Neither team did anything in the 8th and at the top of the 9th inning, Georgia Tech needed at least two runs to keep the game going.
Jett Lovett came in to pinch hit for Jackson but grounded out. Rubenstein and DeLeo were out quickly and that was that. Boston College shut down the Yellow Jackets' offense and tied the series with a 3-1 game two victory.
Tech had their chances, including when the bases were loaded in the third. The offense just could not do enough, despite solid enough performances from both Finley and Finateri.
Game three is set for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
