Analyst Ranks Every Power-Five Starting Quarterback. Where did Haynes King land?
We are moving into the second half of the college football season and at this point in the season, there is a big enough sample size to see who is playing well week-to-week at any position. Through six weeks, Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King is fourth in the ACC in passing yards and the Yellow Jackets are fourth in the ACC in passing yards per game. King has been one of the top transfer quarterbacks in the country, but where would he rank when compared to every other power-five starter?
247 Sports Analyst Clint Brewster actually ranked every power-five starting quarterback and King came in at No. 29. The ACC quarterbacks that were above King were North Carolina's Drake Maye (No. 4), Florida State's Jordan Travis (No. 10), Louisville's Jack Plummer (No. 15), Miami's Tyler Van Dyke (No. 20), Clemson's Cade Klubnik (No. 26), and Duke's Riley Leonard (No. 27).
The top ten of the list included Washington's Michael Penix Jr, USC's Caleb Williams, LSU's Jayden Daniels, Maye, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Oregon's Bo Nix, Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel, Michigan's JJ McCarthy, Georgia's Carson Beck, and Travis.
On their remaining schedule, Georgia Tech will have to face the No. 46 quarterback (Thomas Castellanos), No. 4 Quarterback (Maye), No. 56 quarterback (Anthony Collandrea), No. 26 quarterback (Klubnik), No. 33 quarterback (Garrett Shrader), and No. 9 quarterback (Beck).
When looking at PFF (Pro Football Focus), King possesses a 68.9 offensive grade, a 63.6 passing grade, and a 71.4 rushing grade. King has been effective as a runner this season, rushing for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
Georgia Tech's advanced stats have also taken a nice jump with King leading the passing attack. Georgia Tech is 46th in passing success rate (how good they are passing on a down-to-down basis), 41st in passing EPA/play (Expected Points Added), and 44th in passing EPA/game. There is still a lot of room to improve, but it is fair to say that King has raised the play of this passing attack under offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
Haynes King ranked as one of college football's five best transfers in 2023
Last week, ESPN ranked every transfer quarterback, and King was No. 4:
"King, a former top-50 recruit who opened the past two seasons as Texas A&M's starter, has been productive in his first season with Georgia Tech. He has four games of 290 passing yards or more, and three of 42 rushing yards or more. King has had multiple touchdown passes in five games, and his 16 TD passes are tied for third nationally. He has been a solid contributor on the ground, especially with 53 yards on only six carries in a road win against Wake Forest, and ranks No. 16 nationally in total offense. Entering Week 6, King and LSU's Jayden Daniels were the only FBS quarterbacks with at least 1,400 passing yards, 150 rushing yards and 15 touchdown passes."
King has been one of the surprise impact transfers this year, but there is still plenty to work on, including cutting down on the turnovers (King has four interceptions in the last two games combined). I feel that King is properly ranked among other Power Five quarterbacks and he should only continue to get better.
Georgia Tech vs Boston College kicks off this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. on the ACC Network.
