Georgia Tech Football: Three Bold Predictions for the Second Half of the Season /

College Football is at its midway point in the season and the majority of teams have had their bye week and are assessing what they need to do to be successful in the second half of the season. Georgia Tech is getting ready to start the second half of its season on Saturday when they welcome Boston College to Atlanta and both teams are in need of winning this game if they hope to make a bowl game this season.

Depending on how you look at the first half of the season for Georgia Tech, you can make the argument that they have had a successful first half of the season and you can make the argument that they have had a bit of a disappointing first half. The Bowling Green loss and the second half against Louisville were disappointing, but the Miami win and the road win against Wake Forest were the highlights of the first half.

So what will happen in the second half of the season for Georgia Tech? Let's make some bold predictions.

1. Eric Singleton Jr will be a serious contender for ACC Freshman of the Year

True freshman Eric Singleton Jr. leads the Yellow Jackets in receiving with 355 yards on 20 catches and he has five touchdowns this season, averaging nearly 18 yards per catch. He is currently seventh in the ACC in receiving yards and second in touchdowns. He has given this team much-needed speed at the position and looks like a future superstar. Singleton is the second-highest-graded player on the Georgia Tech offense according to PFF and has a 73.7 grade.

He has been one of the best freshmen in the ACC and the country this season and should be getting plenty of consideration for ACC Freshman of the Year.

There is going to be tough competition for this award, but I think Singleton Jr has been one of the better receivers in the ACC, and with a big second half of the season, Singleton will be considered for this award and he just might win it.

Three things I think, three things I know about Georgia Tech halfway through the 2023 season

2. They might not win, but Georgia Tech will put a scare into either North Carolina, Clemson, or Georgia

Last season as the interim head coach, Brent Key was making a reputation for going on the road as a big underdog against ranked ACC teams and finding a way to win outright. In his first game as the interim, Key took down Pitt on the road and later in the season, beat a 9-1 North Carolina team that was rising in the college football playoff discussion and had a Heisman candidate in quarterback Drake Maye.

Fast forward to this season, Georgia Tech went on the road as a three-touchdown underdog and beat a Miami team, who was ranked No. 17 at the time.

Before Key's win over Pitt last season, Georgia Tech had not beaten a ranked team on the road since 2016.

North Carolina and Georgia come to Atlanta and Georgia Tech has to go to Clemson. The Yellow Jackets have won two straight and four of the last five against North Carolina, they almost shocked Clemson the last time the two teams played in Death Valley, and they played Georgia as tough as they have in years in 2022, with the Bulldogs only leading 10-7 at halftime.

Georgia Tech is going to be a heavy underdog in all three of these games and while I am not going to predict an outright upset, count Brent Key out at your own risk in any of these games.

3. Georgia Tech will make a bowl game

It is not a sure thing, but there is a clear path to a bowl game for the Yellow Jackets, who have not been to one since 2018. The win over Miami flipped that picture entirely because, after the loss to Bowling Green, it looked like the Yellow Jackets were not going to have enough winnable games to realistically make a bowl game.

Now, just because a game is winnable for Georgia Tech does not mean that it is a lock. The Yellow Jackets were three-touchdown favorites against the Falcons and lost the game outright. If they can beat Boston College at home, Virginia on the road, and Syracuse at home, Georgia Tech will be heading to a bowl game.
