Where does ESPN have the Yellow Jackets playing this postseason?

Georgia Tech may have lost on Friday night against Louisville, but their performance may have swayed one ESPN analyst and changed the outlook on the Yellow Jackets.

ESPN's Mark Schlabach released his updated bowl projections today and he thinks the Yellow Jackets are going to the postseason for the first time since 2018. So where are the Yellow Jackets projected to play? None other than Fenway Park in Boston for the Wasabi Fenway Bowl and they are projected to play future conference opponent SMU.

This would be huge for Brent Key and Georgia Tech if they are to get back to a bowl game. Despite the loss on Friday night to Louisville, Georgia Tech played one of its best halves of football in years, scoring 28 points against Louisville in the first half. What Georgia Tech has to figure out now is how to complete and finish games, but there were plenty of good signs coming out of week one.

Obviously, we are only one week into the season and these bowl projections are largely meaningless, but it does say something in my opinion that Georgia Tech lost a game, but still looked impressive enough that they were included in bowl projections after not being there in the preseason. A good step forward for this program would be getting to a bowl game this season.

As for the opponent, it would be fascinating to see how the Yellow Jackets match up with SMU, who will be joining the ACC starting next season. The Mustangs got a win in their season opener and have one of the most explosive offenses in the country. It would certainly be a challenge for the Yellow Jackets and their defense if this is indeed a postseason matchup.

Georgia Tech holds an 8-2 all-time series lead against SMU, but the teams have not played since 1969. Georgia Tech won the last game 24-21. The two programs met every year from 1950-1959. SMU's only wins against Georgia Tech came in 1950 and 1958.

Georgia Tech is getting ready for its first game in Bobby Dodd Stadium this weekend against South Carolina State. Kick-off will be at 1:00 p.m.
