Georgia Tech vs. Bowling Green: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Georgia Tech suffered one of the worst losses in program history today when they lost as three-touchdown favorites at home against Bowling Green.
After scoring touchdowns on their first two drives and going up 14-0, it was all downhill for the Yellow Jackets. From missed tackles, poor third-down defense, and turnovers on the offensive side of the ball, it was a terrible day for Brent Key and the program, who looked improved through the first few weeks of the season.
Let's break down the good, the bad, and the ugly from today's loss to Bowling Green.
The Good
- Eric Singleton Jr. continues to showcase his talent as a true freshman. He caught a 53-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and that was his fifth touchdown in his first five career games.
- Dominick Blaylock had his best game as a Yellow Jackets, catching seven passes for 131 yards.
The Bad
- The pass protection was the worst that it has been all season, as was the run blocking. Haynes King was sacked three times and the Yellow Jackets only ran for 69 yards rushing, averaging a little over three yards per rush.
- The botched special teams turnover in the first half. Georgia Tech has had a myriad of issues on special teams this season and this was another.
- David Shanahan had his worst day of punting this year. Shanahan has been good this season, but today was not great, averaging only 39 yards per punt.
- Bowling Green won the time of possession battle 42:45 to 17:15. Time of possession is not always the most predictive stat, but losing it by this much is never a good sign.
- Only getting two sacks. After collecting eight last week against Wake Forest, the Georgia Tech pass rush was non-existent for much of the game.
The Ugly
- A loss is always ugly, especially when it comes to a 1-3 opponent
- There is no way to sugarcoat this or say it: This is a horrible loss and 100% on Brent Key. Georgia Tech was a three-touchdown favorite, but you would not have known it watching the game. The Yellow Jackets were thoroughly outplayed today and that is not a good sign for the rest of the season. This team had looked better through the first four games, but this is a major setback.
- The defense has all sorts of the same problems. The tackling, pass rush, penalties, stopping the run. This defensive coaching staff, especially coordinator Andrew Thacker, is going to be taking a lot of heat after another poor performance.
- Being outgained 438-417 against Bowling Green is never a good thing, especially when most of the yards for GT came in overtime.
- Bowling Green was 10-17 on third down
- Bowling Green got consistent pressure all night
- Another offensive lull. Georgia Tech has had a habit of starting strong and then going silent. After the first two touchdowns that put them up 14-0, Bowling Green scored 38 unanswered points.
- The Falcons ran for 175 yards
- The running game can't get going for Georgia Tech, making it two straight weeks they struggled. After a good start to the season, the run game has not been able to complement the passing attack.
- Six penalties
- Bowling Green was 21-33 through the air and averaged eight yards per attempt
