Where Does Brent Key Rank Among Other Power Five Coaches on CBS Sports Coaching Rankings?

Key is hoping to guide Georgia Tech back to winning in 2023

Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key is getting ready for his first full season as the head coach of his alma mater and he is hoping to get the Yellow Jackets back to winning games and make their first bowl game since 2018.

CBS Sports and their college football writers annually rank the coaches in the power five conferences and the list was released this week. Due to him not having a full season under his belt, Key ranked on the lower end with some of the recently hired coaches and he was voted No. 63 out of 69 power five coaches.

Key ranked a little higher than some of his peers that were also hired this offseason and that is because he was the interim coach and went 4-4 in those eight games.

Key was ahead of Troy Taylor (Stanford), Zach Arnett (Mississippi State), Brent Pry (Virginia Tech), Tony Elliott (Virginia), Kenny Dillingham (Arizona State), and Ryan Walters (Purdue).

Here is what CBS Sports Tom Fornelli had to say about Key being ranked 63rd:

"After stepping in for the fired Geoff Collins last season, Key, a former Yellow Jackets right guard, earned enough support after going 4-4 as an interim coach to remove the tag and make him the permanent coach."

Key ranks as the 12th-best coach in the ACC according to these rankings.

It is going to be interesting to see where the former Yellow Jacket offensive lineman is ranked at this time next year. If Georgia Tech exceeds expectations, the kneejerk reaction will be to move him up several spots. Georgia Tech has not been to a bowl game since 2018 and their win total projection for this season is currently at 4.5. If this team goes to a bowl game, I expect a jump inside the top 50 for him.
