Chris Eubanks's Wimbledon Cinderella Story Comes to an End
Former Georgia Tech Men’s Tennis Star, Chris Eubanks, took the tennis world by storm this past week as he reached the quarterfinals round of the Wimbledon Championship, beating the #5 player in the world, Stefanos Tsitsipas, to get there. At the start of 2023, Eubanks was ranked #123 in the world and just a couple of weeks ago on June 26th, he stood at #77 in the world. As of July 3rd, before his Cinderella run at Wimbledon, he had climbed to #43 and is expected to jump even higher in the rankings following his stellar performance against top-ranked opponents.
Eubanks's journey to this headlining run in the last couple of weeks began at Georgia Tech where he was named a 2-time All-American and 2-time ACC Player of the Year. After officially turning pro in 2017, Eubanks had struggled to get the big breakthrough needed to be showcased in the Majors consistently. The 2022 US Open marked his first Major win, and from there, he rolled into 2023 rising through the ranks. He won his first title on July 1st at the Mallorca Open, which brought a surging momentum for Eubanks into his Wimbledon debut.
Chris Eubanks kicked off the tournament with a tough first round, beating his opponent 3-1 with two 7-6 sets, and entered a very tough second round, facing the #1 British player and #13 player in the world, Cameron Norrie. After a hard-fought, 7-6 last set, he won 3-1 and advanced to the third round of the tournament where he faced a lower-ranked opponent in Christopher O'Connell. While this should have been an easier match-up in theory, Eubanks fought hard for this match and swept three straight tiebreaker 7-6 sets for the win.
Moving on to the Round of 16 after that win, the opponents became immediately top-class as Eubanks matched up against world #5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. In a thrilling match, the two exchanged sets to start and kept the match very close. Taking the match to five sets, Eubanks was able to get the upper hand on the final set to record his first top-5 win of his career. The win will prove to be life-changing as it all but guarantees him moving up into the 30s in the rankings, giving him access to more tournaments and better seeding.
On Wednesday, Eubanks had a semifinal goal in sight and within reach as he faced world #3 Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. After splitting the first two sets, Eubanks was able to take a 2-1 lead and nearly seal the win in the fourth set, but a close 6-7 loss would bring up a fifth set where Eubanks just could not hold on. Medvedev took advantage of Eubanks tiring in the fifth set and capitalized on his errors to hand over the loss.
This unbelievable run by Chris Eubanks at his Wimbledon debut is one that will not be forgotten by tennis fans and Georgia Tech fans alike. We can hope to see his continued success moving forward, hopefully at the US Open at the end of August.
