Indiana To Meet With Northern Colorado Transfer Dalton Knecht
Indiana will meet with Northern Colorado transfer Dalton Knecht on Wednesday via Zoom. This news was first reported by Jeff Rabjohns.
Knecht is a 6-foot-6 guard who averaged 20.2 points and 7.2 rebounds with a 38.1 3-point shooting percentage in 2022-23. Northern Colorado went 12-20 overall this year and 6-12 in the Big Sky Conference, finishing in eighth place under coach Steve Smiley. On his way to earning second-team All-Big Sky honors, Knecht led the team in minutes played, points, rebounds, blocked shots and 3-pointers made.
Knecht made a big jump between his junior and senior seasons, going from 8.9 to 20.2 points per game. In 2021-22, he shot 36.1 percent from three and started 11-of-35 games for Northern Colorado. Knecht has one year of remaining eligibility.
He began his college basketball career at Northeastern Colorado Junior College, where he shot 45 percent from 3-point range as a freshman in 2019-20. Averaging 23.9 points as a sophomore, Knecht earned first-team NJCAA All-American honors in 2020-21.
Prior to junior college, Knecht attended Prairie View High School in Thornton, Colo., where he averaged 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds as a senior.
The Athletic considers Knecht the 13th-best player in the transfer portal, calling him a "sneaky NBA prospect in hiding at Northern Colorado" and "a legitimate shooter from distance who also pairs it with genuine above-the-rim athleticism."
Knecht is a highly-coveted player in the transfer portal, already hearing from at least North Carolina, Oregon, Kansas, Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Grand Canyon, LSU, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Illinois, Texas, Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, UCLA, West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.
With the departure of Jalen Hood-Schifino, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Race Thompson, Miller Kopp, Tamar Bates, Jordan Geronimo and Logan Duncomb, Indiana has been very active in the transfer portal this offseason, adding forward Payton Sparks from Ball State and meeting with several other players.
As it currently stands, Indiana has four available scholarships if point guard Xavier Johnson's medical hardship waiver is approved.
