Bloomington South's Maddix Blackwell Scores First Indiana State Touchdown vs Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Go figure the one player who could get Indiana State back in the game in Bloomington was the player who himself calls it home.
Indiana State defensive back Maddix Blackwell returned a Jaylin Lucas fumble 75 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter to make it 21-7, cutting into Indiana's lead.
Blackwell graduated from Bloomington South High School in 2020, and had a storied career for the Panthers. Lining up at both wide receiver and defensive back under coach Gabe Johnson, Blackwell earned Indiana AP First Team All-State honors in both 2019 and 2020.
He's one of two Bloomington South players on Indiana State's roster, along with defensive back Tyree Rochell. Indiana State coach Curt Mallory is also a Bloomington South alum, as is Indiana tight end James Bomba.
"I've known [Blackwell's] family for a long time," Mallory told HoosiersNow.com on Wednesday. "I played high school football with his Dad and his Uncle, and I've known their whole family for some time."
The 75-yard fumble return in his hometown was the first touchdown of Blackwell's collegiate career.
