What's Next for Oregon Recruiting After Landing Trent Ferguson?
Schools like Ohio State, Michigan, and Georgia are red-hot on the recruiting trail, landing blue-chip commitments in the past week.
It's been a quiet past couple of months for Oregon on the recruiting trail.
But here come the Ducks.
Dan Lanning and the Oregon Football program have landed two commitments in less than a week to kick off the month of April. Safety Aaron Flowers announced his pledge on Friday and towering offensive tackle Trent Ferguson hopped in the boat on Wednesday.
There's little time to celebrate in recruiting, and everyone wants to know what's next.
For starters, Oregon just hosted some pretty huge visitors in the 2024 class.
Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra cornerback Dakoda Fields is wrapping up his trip today. He's a major target for Demetrice Martin out of Southern California. Ohio State made a solid impression Fields before he made it out to Eugene, but I still think Oregon leads there.
Calabasas (Calif.) wide receiver Aaron Butler visited Oregon over the weekend and the Ducks are really heating up in that recruitment. He raved about new offensive coordinator Will Stein, saying their conversations are some of the best he's ever had with a coach.
Oregon sounds like they've made up some ground in that recruitment, one that had been dominated by Georgia and Alabama. Colorado is a serious contender as well but I think the Ducks really helped themselves this weekend and Jordan Anderson is recruiting Butler heavily as a fellow receiver and Southern California native.
2024 Long Beach (Calif.) Millikan wide receiver Ryan Pellum arrived in Eugene to start an unofficial visit this morning and that's another important trip for a top playmaker in the class. There's family ties there with former Oregon linebacker coach Don Pellum but Junior Adams and this staff will need to make it more than that if they want to beat out schools like USC and LSU that are also heavily involved.
Looking along the offensive line, there are still a lot of big names A'lique Terry is going after. 2024 Draper (UT) Corner Canyon OL Isaiah Garcia is the top player in his state and he'll be taking an unofficial visit to Oregon this weekend. The Ducks have done a great job recruiting Utah in recent cycles after signing Tevita Pome'e in 2023 as well as Ben Roberts and Harrison Taggart in 2022.
Taggart went to Corner Canyon, as did Jackson Powers-Johnson, which could give the Ducks some juice in that recruitment.
Quarterback recruiting heating up
Lastly, the Ducks are gaining a lot of momentum for 2024 Phoenix (Ariz.) Sunnyslope quarterback Luke Moga. He set a commitment for April 28 and the predictions are rolling in with Oregon as the frontrunner.
The timing of his announcement, the day before the spring game, as well as the numerous Arizona connections on the roster and staff lead me to believe that Oregon will be the pick.
2024 Baltimore (MD) St. Frances Academy quarterback Michael Van Buren will visit Oregon this weekend. Penn State looks like the front runner, but the Ducks have been involved for a long time here and could be looking to take multiple quarterbacks in 2022.
I discussed how Oregon might handle the numbers when recruiting a quarterback in 2024 during my latest episode of the Ducks Dish Podcast.
Bonus nugget
All the eyes are on Moga right now when it comes to Oregon's next quarterback, but what about Dylan Raiola?
There's been some chatter and rumors that he's cancelled his visit to Oregon for the spring game. However, I spoke with a source close to the recruitment on Tuesday and was told that the trip is still up in the air and no definite decision has been made.
